SCHOOL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATOR LATEST IN RECENT STRING OF TOP DEPARTURES

The announcement this week that School District Business Administrator Cheryl Schneider is leaving for a similar post in Millburn marks the third time in two years that one of the top district administrators has left.

Two years ago former Superintendent Brian Osborne resigned to take a higher-paying job in New Rochelle, N.Y. His replacement, John Ramos, was not hired until last August.

Former Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Lydia Furnari also left in 2014, replaced by Susan Grierson.

"After being a part of the South Orange and Maplewood community both professionally and as a resident, this was a difficult decision," Schneider said in a statement. "It is just the right time in my life to move on to something new. I have enjoyed living in South Orange-Maplewood, raising my 3 children here and working with such a competent and professional staff. I look forward to hearing about the roll-out of the Strategic Plan and the many initiatives in the works. I have been fortunate to have been a part of the South Orange and Maplewood School District and am grateful for the experience."

Schneider's new post in Millburn will only offer her a $8,500 raise. District officials would not comment when asked if they sought to meet that higher salary and she declined to say if she would have stayed even with a raise.

"Ms. Schneider has been an integral part of the SOMSD leadership team over time," Ramos said in a statement. "She has demonstrated tremendous professional integrity and personal commitment. Her presence, expertise, wisdom and institutional memory will be sorely missed. Still, we wish her every success in her new position."

Board President Elizabeth Baker said the district would seek a replacement as soon as possible, adding, "I am very grateful for Ms. Schneider's unwavering dedication to our school community and diligence in finding ways to maximize our resources and serve the needs of our students in the face of significant budgetary pressures driven by the situation at the State level.  I wish Ms. Schneider the best of luck and look forward to ongoing collaboration with her in her new role in Millburn. As Board President, I will work closely with Administration to ensure a smooth transition as we move forward."

Schneider's departure also comes as yet another principal in the district, Seth Boyden's own Mark Quiles, leaves for retirement. He is the latest in a string of principal changes in the past few years that have affected every school except Tuscan and Marshall.

It is also one of 21 top district changes that have occurred in the past two years. See them HERE.
