"THE PRIZE" AUTHOR RUSSAKOFF AT LIBRARY TONIGHT

Prize and Russakoff
From Maplewood Library:
7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Main Library – When Mark Zuckerberg announced that he was donating $100 million to the city of Newark to improve its schools, longtime Washington Post reporter Dale Russakoff followed the story over the next four years. The result is The Prize, a deeply researched and compelling report.  Most moving are Russakoff’s portraits from inside classrooms, as homegrown teachers and principals battle heroically to reach students damaged by extreme poverty and violence.
Russakoff details the missteps and controversies that plagued the reformers from the beginning. Even with additional funds, the efforts seems to have done shockingly little to improve the quality of Newark’s public schools. By focusing deeply on one city’s issues, the book illuminates many of the problems that all cities face. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing.
“The Prize may well be one of the most important books on education to come along in years.” –New York Times Book Review
