HOW MAPLEWOOD FIREFIGHTERS RISKED INJURY TO SAVE THEIR FIREHOUSE

We've been telling you for weeks about the ambulance fire inside the main Maplewood Firehouse in September and the Township authorizing $260,000 to replace it -- which is expected to be reimbursed with insurance.

But what had not been revealed until now is how the firefighters in the station at the time of the incident risked life and injury to extinguish the flames and prevent what could have been the destruction of the entire firehouse and a fire truck.

Maplewood's bravest fought through smoke and heat to get a fire truck out of the station and use it to begin distinguishing the fire that sent several of them to the hospital.

After distributing the fire department's regular Valor Awards on Tuesday at the Township Committee meeting, Deputy Chief Joe Callaghan detailed how the firefighters reacted to the incident, saved a township building, and refused any honors for their work.
