TUSCAN SCHOOL STUDENT HIT BY CAR PROMPTS POLICE SAFETY MEETING

We told you last week about the motor vehicle accident that injured a 7-year-old child.

Although the youngster is going to be okay, it prompted some concern among those at Tuscan School, where the child is a second-grade student. Plans are underway for a meeting with police to determine how to prevent such accidents in the future.

Principal Malikah Majeed issued this notice to families:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The safety of our students / your children is a responsibility that we share and hold in high regard. The following information is being shared with you in an effort to enhance our students’ safety and well-being on and off campus.

On Thursday, October 15, 2015, while walking to school a Tuscan 2nd Grader being escorted by parent, was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk near the intersection of Prospect Street and Lexington Avenue. We are extremely thankful that our 2nd Grader did not sustain extensive life-altering physical injury from this most frightening incident.

Please take this opportunity to review the safe driving tips from the National Center for Safe Routes to School website, printed on the reverse. Additional resources for keeping children safe while driving around school zones are available via the National Center for Safe Routes to School website at  http://apps.saferoutesinfo.org/lawenforcement/resources/driving_tips.cfm/.

In partnership with Tuscan PTA President Caitlin Bohlman a meeting with members of the Maplewood Township Committee and Maplewood Police will be scheduled to discuss this crucial and far-reaching student safety concern. If you are interested in joining us in this important conversation please contact Caitlin via email at caitlin.bohlman@gmail.com.

In the meantime, we are appealing to all members of the Tuscan School community who drive to and from school and in neighborhoods near and around Tuscan School for your continued awareness and vigilance in demonstrating safe driving practices which keep our students safe and out of harm’s way.

                                                                                  Sincerely,

                                                                                   Malikah Tamar Majeed
                                                                                   Principal

Then, on Sunday, this notice from the Tuscan PTA:

Street Crossing  - This week, a driver struck a Tuscan student in a crosswalk before school. Thankfully, the child did not sustain life threatening injuries in this terrifying incident. Safety of pedestrians is a great concern, not just to the Tuscan community but for SOMA at large. In order to find solutions and create safer streets, Tuscan PTA President Caitlin Bohlman will schedule a meeting with members of the Maplewood Town Council and police department. If you are interested in being part of this conversation, please contact Caitlin via email.
