WATER PIPE CLEARING FLUSHING BEGINS THIS WEEK

From New Jersey American Water:

Water mains that have served Millburn and Maplewood since the early 1900s will be given a new lease on their usefulness when New Jersey American Water begins to clean and line the pipes starting on or about April 10 and lasting through November.

Along the Wyoming Avenue historical district, nearly 22,000 feet of six-inch, unlined cast iron water mains will be cleaned of the minerals and sediment that has built up over time along the inner walls, and then the water mains will be lined with a cement coating. Crews will be working on Wyoming Avenue between Sagamore Road and Ridgewood Road, Linden Street, and Claremont Avenue.

When the $4.2 million project is complete, customers will have increased water flows, improved fire protection and more reliable water service.

By cleaning and lining, New Jersey American Water can extend the life of the water mains. The practice saves the time and expense associated with installing new water mains which would involve excavating roadways, detouring traffic, installing the new mains, and restoring the roadway. Cleaning and lining can be completed in months, whereas water main replacements could take years.

While the work is ongoing, there will be minimal water service disruption for customers. The water services connected to the mains being cleaned and lined will be temporarily relocated to above ground, bypass mains.

New Jersey American Water crews will be working Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Jersey American Water, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to approximately 2.5 million people. Founded in 1886, American Water is the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company.
