STAR-LEDGER AND THE OLD-TIME MAPLEWOOD BASEBALL

The Star-Ledger published this great historical photo this week:

maplewoodP122.jpg

MAPLEWOOD — This photo was taken in Maplewood on June 7, 1902. Seated in the front are, from left, Everett Balch and Edgar Fielding. Standing, from left, are Benjamin Nathan, R.L. Smith, G. Russell Salter, Howard Cheshire, Philip Karcher, Raymond Barnard, Howard Crowell, Howard Gardner, Charlie Edwards and Leander Mosher, with Nason Toulon standing behind them near the tree.
According to the Baseball Almanac, two major league players were born in Maplewood, both playing in the era not too distant from the time of this photo. Archie Campbell pitched for the New York Yankees, Washington Senators and Cincinnati Reds from 1928 to 1930, while Hy Gunning played four games at first base for the Boston Red Sox in 1911.
