SCHOOL BOARD SPLIT VOTE ON BUDGET TAX HIKE

The South Orange-Maplewood School Board showed some clear disagreement on the proposed school budget with a split vote Monday night on the spending plan.

School Board President Beth Daugherty and members Sandra Karriem, Lynne Crawford, Andrea Wren-Hardin and David Giles voted in favor of the budget, while Wayne Eastman, Madhu Pai and Jeff Bennett voted against it. William Gaudelli was absent.

The spending plan is a $104.4 million budget that equates to a $199 tax increase for the average Maplewood homeowner, a 2.5 % increase from the current budget.

Eastman and Bennett went one further, proposing amendments that would have limited the tax hike to 2% and decrease some travel expenses. They were rejected.

The budget now goes for review from the Township Committee tonight and the South Orange Village Trustees March 11. The school board meets next on March 18.
