NEW SCHOOL CALENDAR A HEAD-SCRATCHER

This seems to be the strangest school calendar for the new year.

Not necessarily complaining, but scratching my head as a few friends are, too.

For one, there is no day off for Veterans Day, instead having the Thursday and Friday before Veteran's Day for NJEA convention.

Also, why are there just two days off in February, Feb. 14 and 15, then Presidents Day the following Monday? This also means no school on Valentines Day, always a fun time for kids.

Add to that a spring break, April 8-12, that comes a week after Easter and after Good Friday on March 29. Many families use that week after Easter and combine it with Good Friday to take an extended vacation for Easter.

The district also scheduled a snow day make up day for May 24 if only two of the three snow days are used.

But if more than three snow days are needed this procedure below  follows, again taking days from the spring recess, always a major mistake because many kids, and teachers, do not show up. As many as 30% I have found in the past.

Make-up Days:  Should the District use more than the three allotted
emergency closing days, the first Make up Day will be April 8, 2013,

working forward to April 12, 2013 as needed; or at the end of the school
year if emergency closings occur after April 12, 2013.  *If only two
emergency school closing days are used, schools will be closed on May 24, 2013.

Any and all comments welcomed.
