FIRST AID SQUAD LEADER MANDEL DIES

A sad story to report that Bruce Mandel, captain of the Maplewood First Aid Squad, died today of a heart attack.

Not surprising, he was on the job when he became ill.

PATCH broke the news and distributed this email from Township officials:

I regret to inform you all of the sudden passing this morning of Bruce Mandel, longtime Captain of the Maplewood Volunteer First Aid Squad.

Bruce had just taken a patient to St. Barnabas Hospital and was coming back to Maplewood when he did not feel well. He stopped at the Maplewood Fire Department for assistance. The MFD personnel encouraged Bruce to seek medical attention ... and then [he] was transported by the MFD ambulance where he coded enroute....
His family has been notified. This all took place about 8 a.m. this morning.

Needless to say the Maplewood Fire Department personnel has taken this very sadly, as well as we all will.  A great loss to Maplewood and those in need.

I got to meet Bruce several times and recall his untiring service to the squad, both as a fundraiser and caring medical servant to township residents. He also knew how to run a dunking booth.

In his honor, think about donating to the squad that is vastly underfunded.

Patch also reports:

Services for Bruce Mandel will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Menorah Chapels, 2950 Vaux Hall Road, Vaux Hall, New Jersey (across from Millburn Mall) beginning at 11:30 a.m. Family will be receiving friends and their condolences beginning at 10:45 a.m.
